What is fibromyalgia?
Researchers and other health care experts have described as:
, Musculoskeletal condition "rheumatic"
a condition of the nervous system associated with the perception of abnormal pain;
an autoimmune disease;
one aspect of disorder, post-traumatic stress;
Physical symptoms of depression.
As a naturopathic doctor and someone who suffers from fibromyalgia, my opinion is that it is probably a neurological disorder with a genetic predisposition that comes in the full expression when activated by another disease or traumatic event.
How do you feel?
Have you had the flu? Imagine having all the time. This is more or less what the experience is similar to fibromyalgia. The main symptoms include widespread pain, extreme fatigue, restless sleep. These are symptoms "masters" found in most cases of fibromyalgia.
Other common symptoms include:
difficulty with concentration and memory
mood conditions such as depression and / or anxiety
dizziness, balance disorders
increased sensitivity to everything (smells, lights, noise, drugs, touch)
numbness, tingling or burning
The restless legs syndrome
headaches, migraines, jaw pain
dry eyes, dry mouth
IBS
painful menstruation
Most people experience the first symptoms in adulthood, but may begin in childhood. It is more common in women than in men.
Symptoms may come and go, and your employer can also be changed. Many people have extended periods of time in which to consider alternative "flare" "normal" symptoms.
Worsening of symptoms or flare, can be caused by things like stress, lack of sleep, and infections, as well as changes in atmospheric pressure or temperature.
Diagnosis
No evidence to definitively confirm fibromyalgia, but you can order tests to rule out other diseases that also have pain and fatigue as their main symptoms. Finally, the diagnosis was confirmed on the basis of medical history of the person, physical examination and the fact that no other cause of their symptoms was identified.
Treatment Options
Conventional medical treatment is based on the use of drugs that alter the levels of certain brain chemicals (neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin).
Because daily routines and other lifestyle factors are very important for people with fibromyalgia, go to bed and wake up at consistent times with regular exercise is recommended that methods of pain and fatigue to moderate.
Therapy or therapeutic baths can also be recommended for pain and muscle stiffness. The heat treatment (hot baths, hot packs and heating pads) tends to be very soothing.
Naturopathic care
Myself and other fibromyalgia treatment, I found the following to be beneficial: Co-enzyme Q10 (fatigue), magnesium (pain and stiffness), B vitamins (fatigue), modification of diet (fatigue) factors lifestyle (as described above for the pain and fatigue) and heat treatment (for pain).
As a single treatment, CoQ10 has been excellent to dissipate fatigue.
Perspective
Fibromyalgia is a diagnosis of exclusion, it may take some time to confirm. Be patient and persistent with the diagnostic process - you get the correct diagnosis makes all the difference for treatment.
Although the cause is not yet known fibromyalgia, symptoms can be treated well enough that you can live a more comfortable and productive life. Here are some things to consider:
Do not get discouraged.
Stay away from support groups that focus primarily on complaints. Stay focused on what you do to feel better, not on how you are uncomfortable.
Develop habits of health support and stick to it as much as you can.
Make sleep a priority and do everything possible to improve both the quantity and quality.
Discuss supplementation with a naturopathic doctor (ND).
