Vitamin D Supplement May Reduce Pain, Fatigue and Function in Fibromyalgia Patients

The mystery surrounding the cause of fibromyalgia makes treatment of a difficult subject. Building off of investigation conducted in the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in people with chronic pain , researchers have recently hypothesized that supplementation can relieve pain in people with fibromyalgia.

Vitamin D and pain

Vitamin D has many functions in the body. More particularly, it allows the body to absorb calcium , which plays a role in bone strength and capacity of muscle contraction . The vitamin also helps modulate the inflammatory response among many other functions .

One of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency is pain in the muscles and joints. If the problem persists for a long time, it can lead to bone pain as a result of poor digestion .

Generalized muscle and joint pain is a major symptom of fibromyalgia. This does not mean that the VAD is the cause of fibromyalgia ; many patients with this disease have normal levels of vitamin D. However , since low levels of this nutrient are common in people with chronic pain, supplementation may be beneficial for people with low test levels .

Fibromyalgia and supplementation

A very small pilot study of 30 women with low levels of vitamin D compared pain levels , function scores and morning fatigue among other measures of women who received scores of supplements for women who received the placebo . The women took either a supplement or a placebo for 25 weeks. Their results were taken at that time, and then again 24 weeks after stopping treatment.

After 25 weeks of treatment, complementation group showed significant improvements in scores of operation and morning fatigue , compared with little or no change in the placebo group . In the final follow-up 24 weeks after treatment , the supplementation group showed significant improvements in pain scores collected .
